Water, water, everywhere, and more we all should drink! Water comprises 60%-70% of the human body and is vital for many different functions, including acid-base balance, waste removal, regulating body temperature, and maintaining a healthy metabolism. The balance between water and electrolytes like sodium and potassium determines how most of our body systems function, especially nerves and muscles.

Being even slightly dehydrated can affect thinking, mood, and energy levels. Severe dehydration can be dangerous and even fatal. So how much water do we really need? The answer depends on the individual, but generally speaking we should drink enough so that we need to use the bathroom every 2-4 hours. All non-alcoholic beverages count towards our fluid needs, even caffeinated ones, but plain old water is the best choice. Foods that are high in water content like fruits and vegetables count too.

Here are some tips to help you stay hydrated:

•Carry a bottle of water with you throughout the day; a reusable aluminum water bottle will keep your water chilly and your costs low
•To perk up the taste of plain water, add some produce (think citrus, berries, cucumber, mint, and ginger); experiment with different flavor combinations to find your favorite
•When you’re feeling hungry, drink water first; thirst is often confused with hunger, and drinking water can help you feel full
•Make water your drink of choice at restaurants; you’ll save money and calories

So raise a glass, or a bottle, or even a can of water, whether it’s still or sparkling, flavored or plain, and toast to your good health!
