The açaí berry is the inch-long, reddish-purple fruit of the açaí palm tree, which is native to Central and South America. Açaí berries have become “berry” popular among the health-conscious lately, and with good reason. Açaí berries contain protein, dietary fiber, healthy fats, calcium, iron, vitamins A and C, and oodles of antioxidants.

Açaí berries boast high levels of antioxidants called anthocyanins, which seek out and eliminate the free radicals that are responsible for a wide variety of diseases and conditions including heart disease and cancer. Açaí berries are also rich in plant sterols and polyphenols, which can improve markers of cardiovascular disease and fight cancer too.

 

Açaí berries are delicious blended into smoothies in frozen or powdered form, or in “açaí bowls” that combine them with other fruits, grains, nuts, seeds, and nutmilk. Experiment with different ingredient combos and raise a spoon to your good health!
